The Click Is Disappearing. Your Google Business Profile Still Has to Win the Job.

68% of searches now end without a click. Here is what has to work on your Google Business Profile so the phone still rings for your roofing company.

A homeowner in Ohio had a roof leak last month. She typed "roofer near me" into Google. Google gave her an answer right there on the results page. She never clicked anything.

She still needs a new roof. She just never visited a single roofing website to find one.

This is happening more and more. Sixty eight percent of Google searches in the US now end without a click, according to a 2026 study from SparkToro. Not for some niche industry. Sixty eight percent overall.

You can rank first for every keyword you want. If she never clicks, ranking first does not put a dime in your pocket.

The Click You Used to Count On Is Gone

Search used to work like this. A homeowner searched. She saw ten blue links. She picked one and clicked.

That homeowner journey is mostly gone now.

Today she searches "roofer near me" and Google shows her the Maps Pack first. Three roofing companies. Names, ratings, photos, hours. All right there on the results page.

She can call one of those three roofers without ever clicking through to a website. If Google's AI Overview shows up instead, she might get a written answer that names two or three companies. Still no click.

I spent five years on roofing crews. Then thirty years in technology. I have never seen search change this fast.

The roofer who used to win by ranking first on the search results page now has to win somewhere else. That somewhere else is the Google Business Profile she sees without ever leaving Google.

What Homeowners See Before They Ever Reach Your Website

Here is what she actually sees on that results page. Your business name. Your star rating. How many reviews you have. A few photos. Whether you are open right now.

That is the whole pitch. She never has to click for any of it.

The photos she sees first are not random. Google picks them. Most roofers never check which ones show up.

The review count matters just as much. A roofer with 12 reviews and a 4.9 rating can beat a roofer with 80 reviews and a 4.3 rating. She is not counting reviews. She is scanning for a reason to trust you in about three seconds.

If your profile has old photos, a stale review count, or hours that say closed when you are not, she moves to the next name on the list. She never opens your website to find out you would have answered.

What Still Has to Win the Job Without It

You cannot control whether Google sends her to your website. You can control what she sees when Google skips it.

Start with your photos. Update them every few months. Recent job photos beat a logo and a stock photo of a roof every time.

Keep your reviews coming. Not in a big batch once a year. A steady stream, a few a month, so the ones she sees stay recent.

Fix your hours if they are wrong. Google sometimes marks a business closed based on outdated information you never corrected. A homeowner searching at 6 p.m. should not see "Closed" if you are still taking calls.

And if she does call straight from that card, someone has to actually pick up. All of this work gets undone by a missed call.

None of this requires ranking first anymore. It requires the profile itself to do the job your website used to do.

Ranking First Was Never the Finish Line

Roofers have chased rankings for years. Get to the top of Google. Beat the guy down the street. Show up first.

Ranking first still matters. It gets you into the game. It just does not win the job by itself anymore, not when most searches end before anyone clicks a single link.

The roofer who wins now is the one who treats his Google Business Profile like a second website. Update it like one. Watch it like one. Because for a growing number of homeowners, it is the only website they will ever see.

Ignore it, and the phone stops ringing for reasons you will not see in your website analytics. Your traffic might even look fine. The calls just stop matching it.

►What is a zero click search?

A zero click search is when Google answers the question right on the results page. The homeowner gets what she needs and never visits a website.

►Does SEO still matter if homeowners are not clicking through?

Yes. Ranking still gets you into the Maps Pack and the AI answer. It just is not the whole job anymore. What she sees on your Google Business Profile has to close the deal too.

►How does Google's AI Overview affect roofing searches?

When a homeowner searches for a roofer, Google's AI Overview can name a few companies directly in the answer. She can call one without ever visiting a website.

►What matters most on a Google Business Profile if homeowners are not clicking through?

Recent photos, a strong review count, and hours that are actually correct. Those three things are often the entire pitch a homeowner sees.

►What happens if a roofer ignores this shift?

The phone stops ringing for reasons that will not show up in website traffic reports. Rankings can look fine while calls quietly drop.

The Search-to-Booked System was not built to chase rankings that used to matter. It was built for this exact shift. Winning the Google Business Profile, the Maps Pack, and the AI answer she sees before she ever thinks about clicking anything.
